London Riots – Darcus Howe

11 Aug

Watch this video and come to your own conclusions.  This is a very interesting perspective on the London riots.

I have watched it and I have mine.  This broadcaster was trying to make Mr. Darcus out to be some rioting lunatic and trying to trip him up.  She comes out looking pretty ignorant.

Bullied Like Me

3 Jun

I’ve added a new blog to the blog roll on the side of my blog……blog.  This one by my good bud, and very funny comedian, Rams.  Usually, Rams likes making people laugh because he’s good at it.  However, ‘Bullied Like Me’ is about Rams experiences about getting bullied as far back as he can remember.  Also something pretty cool about this blog is that Rams encourages other people to send in their “getting bullied” stories so it’s not just a one man show.  Think of it as blog therapy.  If you’d like to share your story with Rams, and all of Rams faithful followers, send your stories to bulliedlikeme@gmail.com.

The Great Glebe Garage Sale Tips

26 May

It is the greatest exchange of second hand goods in Ottawa.  NAY, THE WORLD!!  Nay, just Ottawa.  You will literally find anything your heart desires in the Glebe this weekend, if you start early enough that is.  Anything from vinyl records to used stuffed animals.  If you are a collector of TV guides, ala Frank Costanza, I’m sure you will be in luck tomorrow.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind for the madness that is the Great Glebe Garage Sale:

  1. Start early:  It get’s crazy down there.  Being there early could be the difference between you buying a pool table or buying cue chalk.  Also, due to the construction down there parking will be limited.
  2. Bring cash:  Lot’s of it!  Oddly enough, the residents of the Glebe will not be accepting debit or VISA/Mastercard.
  3. Bring your negotiating skills:  The people in the Glebe are nice people.  They are the kind of people that will help an old lady across the street.  However, they are shikesters (sh-IKE-sters) and they will try and take you for all your worth if you’re not ready to get tough on $$$.  Don’t feel like you have to pay top dollar for the China with the cracks all over it.
  4. Elbows up:  It get’s crowded at the GGGS.  Be courteous to women and children but to everybody else, ESPECIALLY the Irish, take no prisoners.
  5. Lay on the sunblock:  You will likely be outside for hours due to the enormous amount of stuff you will be browsing through.  If you don’t want to look like a lobster by days end, throw on some block.  The higher the SPF the lower the chance that you will be regretting being outside the day before.
  6. Everybody for themselves:  If you want something, take it.  Don’t let some guy tell you he was there first.  Possession is 9/10 of the law.  Rip out of that guys hand to take possession and refer to tip #4.
Enjoy the weekend everybody!

Jimmy

Zach Bennett

11 May

I had an idea for a blog post that now seems irrelevant.  ESPN did a little something on their E:60 show about a young boy who, while dealing with a terrible disease, finds happiness in the Charlotte Checkers, an American Hockey League team.   It’s a tear jerker, FYI.  However, it’s an amazing story about young Zach Bennett and his family.  Please click here and watch the video.

Old Maple Lane face

25 Mar

Here is Old Maple Lane.  It’s where I’ll be recording music, playing pool, and living out my days. I thought Old Maple Lane needed a face so Rachel Fobert gave it one.

TOMS’ One day without shoes – April 5th, 2011

22 Mar

One day without shoes is an event held every year (For the last two?) by TOMS shoes, founded by Blake Mycoskie, to let everyone see what it’s like to live ONE DAY without shoes, like many children who live in third world countries do everyday.  ”Why shoes are important:  Mountainous and muddy terrain makes farming difficult, both physically and economically.  This leaves kids exposed to infection, intestinal worms, and cold weather illness.  Long-term benefit:  With additional protection from illness and infection, kids can spend more days helping their families and building up their potential in school.”  From onedaywithoutshoes.com.  Children in third world countries cannot go to school if they aren’t wearing shoes.  That’s why TOMS’ are a pretty awesome company.  For every pair of shoes you buy they will give a pair to a child who doesn’t have shoes.  You can buy TOMS at Slaysh (775 Bank St.)

So, will you go without shoes on April 5th?  That is the challenge.  I will be going without shoes because not only is it a cool challenge but I think it’s important that people know what some of these kids go through on a day-to-day basis.  Below is a little video TOMS put together about what the day is about fully equipped with celebrity endorsements.

Challenge laid.  For me, challenge accepted.

Time Square screens hack

16 Mar

I believe it’s called “Oober Pwnage.”  This gentleman hacked some Time Square screens by only using and iPhone 4, a thing-a-ma-doo, and some kind of black magic.  The result, I think I would have to call it “Mega Face Time.”

success and nothing less,

Jimmy

Old Maple Lane Studio

14 Mar

I am but a few mics, mic stands, and mic cords away from my recording studio being ready to rock.  I think I’ve settled on “Old Maple Lane” for a name.  It kind of reminded me of “Abbey Road” so I had to roll with it.  I’ve been buying gear up like crazy these past few weeks.  I’m like the Pretty Woman of buying up recording gear.  Yeah, that’s a Pretty Woman reference.

My recording studio has:

  • 27″ iMac equipped with Pro Tools 9
  • Onyx 1640i Fire wire audio interface
  • Two KRK 5″ monitors in the control room
  • Gibson ES-335
  • Fender Stratocaster
  • Fender Telecaster
  • Pearl drum kit
  • Yamaha keyboard

I built a house in the first place so I could throw a recording studio in there somewhere.  Now I find myself spending a lot of time learning about sound quality and how I can make my recordings better.  Acoustic panels, bass traps, portable gobos, all of which are foreign objects to me.  But, learning about this stuff is proving to be lots of fun and interesting.

I haven’t figured out whether or not I will rent out my space to aspiring musicians who want to record an album yet, but I will say this.  Any recording package I offer will include the use of all my recording equipment and a grilled cheese at lunch.  If I can get my internet at home up and running, I’m going to try and merge the blog and the recording studio at home.

Jimmy
